U.S. Handcycling received information Sunday, that two prominent members of our handcycling community were seriously injured yesterday, after being hit by a car while training in Florida. Chief Designer at Top End, Chris Peterson, and multiple World Champion, Monique Van der Vorst (in from Holland to train, and race in in the upcoming U.S. Handcycling Series races in Georgia) were both struck from behind by a vehicle driven by an elderly man, who claims he "did not see them."
Peterson suffered numerous injuries, but was immediately up to check on the condition of Van der Vorst and flag down someone to call an ambulance. Both athletes were flown to hospital in Tampa. Fortunately, early reports indicate that both athletes will recover from their injuries, with Van de Vorst suffering only minor bumps and bruises -- although more tests are pending to check the condition of her spine. Peterson did not fare as well, suffering numerous broken bones.
Peterson's usual training partner, Scott McNeice, phoned me yesterday with this unfortunate news. This is not the first (and unfortunately, probably not the last) phone call I have received with news of cyclists hit by vehicles. It is never a good phone call, and it's very disheartening when you hear news of friends needlesly hurt! Chris Peterson has been one of the most significant contributors to the growth of handcycling worldwide, not to mention a big supporter of U.S. Handcycling, as well as a personal friend. Another close friend, Van der Vorst has long been a pioneer in women's handcycling, and our thoughts and prayers are with them both!
Invacare athlete, Monica Bascio, was shocked and dismayed after hearing the news: "It just makes me angry....I'm more and more nervous about riding on the road anymore....this is a big blow to the sport of handcycling....but most importantly, Monique and Chris are good friends and I hope they can recover quickly!"
